The title comes from a fictitious “circus” which incorporates a group of characters who are all in a sense “sans patrie”. The circus, of course, is intended as a metaphor for the wider society. A black weightlifter in a leopard skin leotard, like a human King Kong is standing on top of a building. He holds a white ballet dancer aloft. The building painted with circus characters is a cabinet with a secret compartment in the floor. The piece plays on scale but is structured as a pointed triangle. In 1997 this was the first time I had exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy Summer Exhibition as an artist (I’d exhibited before in 1988 as an architect).
