The Iolaire (Gaelic for Eagle) was an Admiralty yacht commissioned, after the First World War to bring sailors back to Lewis. On the 31st December 1918 it hit the infamous rocks “the Beasts of Holm” outside Stornoway harbour and sank yards short of the shore. To this day it ranks with the Titanic as one of the worst British peacetime maritime disasters. Of the 280 on board, 205 men perished and few families on Lewis were unaffected by the tragedy.
