The forty martyrs of Sebaste

About 440 mm high.

The title derives from a Greek icon which shows 40 Roman soldiers, having openly confessed their Christian faith who were left to freeze to death on a winter pond. The story is that one of the 40 left early. His place was then taken by one of the Roman guards. Many of my driftwood pieces are about little crowds.
