About 230mm wide.
The backboard which I picked straight off the beach had the remnants of “No More Nails” on it. The rope and the wood with the wooden spike came together quickly, as some pieces do, to suggest the subject matter. I wanted to make a little portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) using rope for his hair. Then I copied a few of Basquiat’s artistic devices to make up the background. The speech bubble in Italian of Basquiat’s words reads:
“I start with a picture and then finish it.
I don’t think about art when I’m working.
I try to think about life”
I crossed out words as Basquiat once said that people will see them “more” that way. I changed the title because someone said the figure looked more like Jimmy Hendrix than Jean-Michel Basquiat.
