This was one of 21 candleholders which I carved for my daughter’s wedding
At the 1931 Beaux-Arts Ball in New York architects came dressed as the buildings which they had previously designed. I liked that idea and used it as a starting point. The hat is loosely based on the Chrysler building with different faces on each side which I have to say look more 17th than 20th century. As is often the case I’ve really no idea how that happened.
The candle holder is a bonsai pot from Shigaraki, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan.
