This was one of 21 candleholders which I carved for my daughter’s wedding.
I had to work hard to get this piece to work to my satisfaction, mainly in the painting. I wanted to incorporate a kind of Middle Eastern feel to the work trying to pick up on the hammered brass work of the container. In the end the detailed pattern was based on a Moroccan flatweave. The candleholder is the brass bowl which when filled with water has a floating candle in it. Birds around the bowl were added towards the end. Thoughts of using hanging strings of silver Ottoman coins just didn’t happen. Often a piece is defined more by what you reject than what you incorporate.
