Raft of the Medusa #2

2012

Driftwood.

660mm(w) x 760mm(h) x 50mm(d)

The inspiration for this piece was the Romantic movement painting by Gericault showing the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Meduse off the coast of Mauritania in 1816. The original painting in the Louvre depicts an everyday picture of the survivors on the makeshift raft as they endure starvation, dehydration, cannibalism, madness and eventually death. I made one before so this is no 2.
