I acquired a small 1930’s tin which had once contained “barmsule” capsules. The logo on the tin proclaimed that the contents promoted “life in a capsule” and on the back “medical opinion” proclaimed “To be effective, barm must be active. This preparation is a great advance and is most useful” Actually it couldn’t have been that great an an advance since I couldn’t find much evidence of it on the internet. Improbably I did find “barm” – “the scum of fermented liquor” The sign on the boat is cut from the tin and I expect the crew are the type who prefer their barm when it comes in pint glasses.
