This was one of 21 candleholders which I carved for my daughters wedding

This is one of my “people as a building” pieces with motifs suggesting horizontal movement. This is picked up in the title and the street sign “One Way” on the back. I tried to paint the body like it was a crumbling building in Venice or Naples. I enjoyed painting the hat which is based on a 17th century sleeping cap of the kind you might see in the V&A. The bird is a compositional device.
